Harnett County
Harnett County in North Carolina was founded in 1855 from part of Cumberland County. It was named after Cornelius
Harnett, a member of the Continental Congress. The county seat is
in Lillington, but the largest city is Dunn.
I focus primarily on Western and Southern Harnett
County. This part of Harnett County has historically been very
rural, with the major occupation being farming. As more people
have moved to the region, this part of Harnett County has become a
bedroom community to Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base, and Raleigh.
There are no major cities in this area but there are many
subdivisions, and retail shopping is beginning to expand into Western
and Southern Harnett County.
This area is part of what Carolina residents call the
Sandhills. This is the part of the state where the last hills
fade into the costal plains. Harnett County has some of the same
gentle hills made famous by golf courses such as Pinehurst in
neighboring Moore County. This part of Harnett County has
several golf communities, such as Carolina Lakes, Anderson Creek, and Carolina Seasons.
One of my favorite places to visit in Harnett County is
Raven Rock State Park. This park is divided by the Cape Fear
River. This part of the Cape Fear River cuts through what is
called the fall line. This is where the river falls through the
last rocky hills before the costal plain. At this point, large
rocky cliffs rise above the river. These cliffs were named Raven
Rock after the birds nesting in the crevices. The top photo on
the right was taken from the top of these cliffs, which offer a
fantastic view.
