So the Denver Broncos have won Super Bowl 50 and Peyton Manning gets to ride off into the sunset just like his boss, John Elway. We had a great run. Even though the offense was average at best, they didn’t have to be much better than they were since the defense was playing lights out. And as predicted, the defense won the game and the championship.
Everyone thought Cam Newton was going to be unstoppable, but to me it looked as if he was gassed. No explosiveness, never caught his breath, and lacked confidence. I guess running from Von Miller all night will do that to you.
So Manning retires, Osweiler goes to the Houston Texans and the Broncos are scrambling for a new franchise quarterback. It is very well documented that John Elway built this team to win now so the million dollar question is how long will “now” last? The defense is still in pretty good shape, but who will drive the ship. I don’t believe they will have another opportunity to win like this season if they don’t create more production and points on offense.
I was hoping they would get Robert Griffin III from Washington, but no luck. I think Collin Kapernik from the San Francisco 49ers could be a good choice, but we are in wait and see mode for him. I don’t think there will be a starter caliber quarterback that will be good enough “now” to start. So it could be up to Mark Sanchez to drive the ship – which could be OK if our defense stays good enough.
The next few days and weeks will tell us a lot about the direction John Elway and crew will go to make us contenders again this season. We all know how incredibly difficult it is to win back-to-back Super Bowls, but Denver has proven that they have done it before so they can do it again!
